Here is a preview of the Matthews Arena Virtual tour.  This is but an amateur rendering of the balcony seating plan.  I chose to begin with the balcony because Matthews is the only arena in Hockey East with a true balcony.  Also, in deference to those who have not yet been to the arena for a game, you will want to know exactly where the DogHouse is.  I hope that this provides some valuable information to Husky Hockey fans and to fans planning a trip to Historic Matthews Arena.

The rendering above is as close to precise as I can get.  The balcony is in fact a mere four rows back from the glass.  That is right, you are basically looking straight down onto the action.  The balcony is not original construction; it was built in the 1930s.  In 1995, Northeastern University extensively renovated the ice surface of Matthews to an enlarged 200' x 90' surface.  This required the removal of a few rows surrounding the rink in the stadium area, but gave those of us upstairs a steeper angle to watch the game.  There is no other arena in the country that affords as intimate a view of the game of hockey as Historic Matthews Arena.

Completed in 1910 as the Boston Arena, Matthews is the oldest college indoor sports facility in the nation, and possibly the oldest indoor arena in the world.  Granted, many of Europe's old arenas were probably destroyed during World War Two.

Matthews has been the site of events ranging from Presidential campaign speeches to professional wrestling.  Now it is the home of the Northeastern Huskies Men's and Women's Ice Hockey teams.
